What Is Cloud Migration?
It’s when we move your stuff to the cloud.
Cloud Migration is an integral first step in all the cloud services that we offer. If you don’t migrate your data first, nothing else that we do is possible. At CloudSmartIT, we make this process as efficient and straight-forward as possible.
Cloud Migration In 5 Simple Steps:
Step 1: Initial Assessment
The first thing that needs to happen before your migration begins is an initial assessment from one of our team members. We will need to gain a thorough understanding of your business, your technological needs, and your IT assets.
Do you have multiple locations? Do you have people who work remotely? Do you control sensitive or confidential data? Or is transparency important for you?
These are a few examples of the kinds of questions that we’ll be asking you. Once we have a solid grasp on who you are and what you need, we’ll move to step 2.
Step 2: Proof of Concept / Demo
It’s important to us that you know exactly what you’re signing up for. By the time we finish this process, we want you to be well informed and completely comfortable when it comes to the cloud.
Before going any further, we will set up a mock-cloud environment for you. It will be thoughtfully crafted to fulfill your unique set of needs, and will function in much the same way that your end product will. This will be your time to test the waters. Get in! Splash around! Interact with the environment that we have created for you. This will give us the ability to troubleshoot any issues that might arise and make the necessary changes ahead of time.
Once we’ve worked out the kinks, it’s time to take action!
Step 3: Set Up
This is where we spend the time necessary to lay the foundation and set the framework for your cloud environment. We will use your preferences and needs (established in step 2) as our guide.
You won’t need to do anything during this step. This is our job. You can relax.
Once we have created the infrastructure your business needs in order get the most it can from the cloud, it’s time to start thinking about a timing.
Step 4: Set The Cut Date
The “cut date,” as you may have guessed, is the date when the actual migration will be carried out. We work quickly, but you will need to plan around this date. You might want to give yourself a week or so ahead of time to get ready.
It’s important to note that you are not obligated to migrate all of your data at the same time. If you’d prefer, the migration can occur in a few different phases. This option is usually only chosen by very large companies because of the volume of data that will need to be migrated. Staggering the migration process like this can allow for better continuity, and will require multiple dates to be set.
Step 5: Start The Migration!
When the cut date arrives, it’s time for us to perform the migration!
How long does migration take?
This depends on a variety of things, but as a general rule of thumb, assuming an upload speed of 25 MB, 1 TB of data (that’s 1,000 GB), takes 3 to 4 days to migrate. If you know exactly how much data you need to migrate, you can use this calculator to get a more accurate reading on how long you can expect the process to take. Still, if you want an answer that is 100% accurate, you’ll just have to get in touch with us and ask!
Can we still conduct business as normal during migration?
During the migration process, you are pretty much offline. That is why we usually aim to conduct this process over a weekend. If we can get started by 4:00pm on Friday, we should be able to have you back up and running by Monday morning. We’ll have support staff on site during the entire process to make sure that everything is completed according to plan. Data migration is hassle, but we strive to make this process as seamless and pain-free as possible.
That’s our process! We will be in close contact with you from start to finish, never unavailable for your comments, questions, or concerns. We believe in what we do, and we want you to love the cloud just as much as we do!
